Changing Your California Agent for Service of Process

To change your agent for service of process, file a Certificate of Amendment (Form LLC-2) with the SOS. Fee: $30. You can also update your agent on your biennial Statement of Information (LLC-12, $20). For all compliance, see our post-formation guide.

How to Change

Option 1: File Form LLC-2 (Certificate of Amendment) — $30 at bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov Option 2: Update on your next Statement of Information (LLC-12) — $20 (only if your SOI is due soon)

Agent Resignation

If your agent resigns, they file a Resignation of Agent (Form AGENT RES) with the SOS. You have 30 days to designate a replacement. If you do not, the SOS becomes your default agent (but you remain in violation until you designate a proper agent).

Can I switch to a cheaper agent service?

Yes. File LLC-2 ($30) with the new agent's information. The change is effective upon SOS filing.
